What is orthodontics
If you have a question about orthodontics, we may provide the answer below. If you have a question that we haven’t answered here, don’t hesitate to contact us and we’ll be happy to help you.
What are the benefits of early orthodontic evaluation?
Early evaluation provides an opportunity to detect problems at the earliest stage, and therefore to offer the most effective treatment. Even if no orthodontic treatment is required at this stage, the orthodontist can monitor growth and development so the treatment can begin at the optimal time.
Am I a candidate? How do I know if an orthodontist can help me?
Orthodontics can straighten your teeth for an aesthetic and attractive appearance. However, orthodontics also plays an important part in your oral health. Crooked teeth and problematic bites (malocclusions) can affect the way you chew and your ability to effectively clean your teeth. This can profoundly impact the health of your teeth and your self esteem. An evaluation by an orthodontist will help you determine the nature of your problem, and the best way to fix it.
I’ve heard orthodontic treatment can take years. How long will I have to be treated?
Treatment time will vary greatly from patient to patient. Many factors are at play, including the type and severity of the problem, the growth of the patient’s mouth and face (for children and teens), and the patient’s level of cooperation throughout treatment. In general terms, braces are worn for an average of one to three years. A consultation with your orthodontist will provide you with more specific information for your case.
How much will my treatment cost?
Treatment cost is highly variable, depending upon the severity of the problem and the necessary treatment. All fees and costs will be discussed upfront and in detail before the treatment begins.
I am nervous about wearing braces. Are there any alternatives?
For adults and teens, we offer a comfortable, convenient and effective solution to braces. D-alignersTM are medical-grade, clear polymer aligners that are produced specifically for your teeth via advanced computer imaging technology. Unlike braces, they can be removed during eating and for special occasions, but must be worn a minimum of 17 hours a day. For more information about D-alignersTM, click here or contact our practice.
Do braces hurt?
Most patients experience some discomfort when braces are first put on, and also during tightening and adjustment by the orthodontist. This mild pain can be effectively managed with over-the-counter pain relief medication, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. The orthodontic team will assist you with any issues of discomfort you may have.
If I am under the care of an orthodontist, do I still need to see my dentist?
It is very important to maintain a regular oral hygiene routine while undergoing orthodontic treatment. This includes thorough brushing, flossing and visits to the dentist for regular cleanings. Braces can interfere with your ability to clean your teeth thoroughly, so it is as important as ever to visit the dentist periodically during treatment.
When should I bring my child to the orthodontist?
Successful orthodontic treatment requires partnership and cooperation between the orthodontist and the patient. There are a few things you can do to make the most of your treatment:
- Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing carefully.
- Wear the appliances and rubber bands or aligners exactly as prescribed by the orthodontist.
- Keep appointments as scheduled.
- If the appliance gets damaged (i.e. a broken wire), contact the clinic immediately for advice, assistance and repair.
