Retainers
Removable retainers
When the active treatment is complete and braces are removed, we begin the retention phase. During retention, the patient wears a removable appliance called a retainer, which holds the teeth in the correct position until the bone, gums and muscles adapt. The retainer should be worn at all times, except while eating and brushing your teeth. It may be removed during contact sports.
Fixed retainers
A fixed retainer typically consists of a passive wire usually bonded to the tongue-side of the incisors, depending upon the patient’s bite. Unlike removable retainer types, fixed retainers cannot be removed by the patient. The length of the retention period will vary from patient to patient. It is a vital part of the teeth straightening process and patients should take care to follow the orthodontist’s instructions.
Handy Tips about your Retainer
- Wear your retainer at all times, except when eating, brushing your teeth, playing contact sports, or when swimming in the sea or a lake where the retainer could become lost.
- When not wearing the retainer, store it in the protective case provided for you. This will protect the retainer and prevent damage.
- Follow your orthodontist’s instructions – the success of your orthodontic treatment depends on a proper retention phase.
- When you first wear the retainer, you may find your speech is somewhat affected. Don’t worry – this will pass after a few days when you adjust to the retainer.
- You may experience irritation of the tissue on the roof of your mouth at the beginning of the retention phase. If this does not pass after a few days, contact the clinic.
- Clean your retainers after each meal and before going to bed. Make sure to clean gently, and with warm (not hot!) water and toothpaste. Retainers are fragile items, so you don’t want to risk causing damage during cleaning.
- Brush your teeth before putting the retainer in. This will help to prevent bacteria build-up and gum irritation.
- If your retainer gets damaged or cracked, do not wear it as the plastic may come off and become lodged in your throat. Contact the clinic immediately and we will repair or replace it.
- Retainers are designed for normal handling, but they will break if handled roughly. If your retainer breaks, contact the clinic immediately to make an appointment. Make sure to bring all the pieces of the broken retainer to your appointment.
- Never wrap your retainer in a towel, napkin or tissue, as it may be accidentally thrown away. If your retainer is lost, you will need to make an appointment to have a new one made.
